Understanding Binge Shopping and ADHD: A Guide

Hey there, it’s Amanda—your friendly neighborhood neurodivergent millennial! Today, I want to peel back the layers on a behavior that many with ADHD (and beyond) can relate to: the rush of binge shopping. Let’s dive in!

We all experience an ebb and flow in our moods, right? This is especially true for those of us navigating life with ADHD. While maintaining consistency is crucial in every aspect, including our finances, sometimes we find ourselves in darker places—feeling lonely, caught in a repetitive routine, or just a bit off. In those moments, the allure of a new purchase can feel like a lifeline, offering that quick hit of dopamine we crave with minimal effort. A single click can lead to an entirely new wardrobe for summer!

However, while indulging in a shopping spree can provide momentary relief, it’s essential to remain within our financial means. There’s a quote that resonates with me: “Everything in moderation, including moderation.” But the key to this balance is being self-aware enough to recognize when our spending habits start to spiral out of control.

For example, I recently treated myself to a few hundred dollars’ worth of new clothes. I paused when I found myself comparing the latest Apple Watches. Sure, a shiny new gadget would be nice (and trust me, I deserve it!), but splurging on a whim for something that costs hundreds requires planning and consideration.

I’ve implemented a personal budget and have set a mental threshold for my monthly spending. If I exceed that number, I know it’s time to take a step back and reassess. It’s like a safety net that keeps me accountable. And let’s not forget the wisdom of resiliency: “Strong men create good times; good times create weak men; weak men create rough times; and rough times create strong men.” Right now, I might be in that “good times” zone, but I must stay grounded and focused on what truly matters to me.
